Rediscovering who you are

After years of shaping life around a relationship, it is common to wonder who you are now. Values and small experiments can help you find out.

Many women say that somewhere along the way they lost track of themselves. They knew their partner's favourite meals, their children's schedules and everyone's moods, but not what they themselves enjoyed anymore.

This can happen in a relationship that is ending, one that is changing, or one you are working to rebuild. Getting to know yourself again does not require leaving anyone. It just requires some attention turned inward.

Start with values, not goals

Goals are things you want to achieve. Values are what you care about and how you want to live. Values can guide you even when the big picture is unclear.

Read through these words and notice which ones feel important to you. Do not choose what you think you should value. Choose what feels true.

  • Honesty
  • Creativity
  • Calm
  • Adventure
  • Connection
  • Independence
  • Learning
  • Faith or spirituality
  • Health
  • Fun
  • Fairness
  • Beauty

Pick three or four. Then ask yourself: how much room does each of these have in my life right now? Where could I make even a little more room?

Small experiments

Rediscovery does not usually arrive as one big realization. It tends to come from trying small things and noticing how they feel. Think of these as experiments, not commitments. There is no failing an experiment. You are simply collecting information about yourself.

  • Go somewhere alone, like a café, a gallery or a trail, and notice what you enjoy about it
  • Pick up something you loved before, like music, drawing or a sport
  • Try something completely new that has always made you curious
  • Change one small thing in your space so it feels more like yours
  • Spend time with a friend who knew you before this relationship
  • Say no to one thing you would usually agree to out of habit

Noticing what comes up

After each experiment, take a moment to ask: Did I feel more like myself? Did I feel drained or energized? Would I do this again? Over time, patterns will show you more about who you are now.

You may also notice resistance, guilt or sadness. Some women feel guilty spending time on themselves. Some grieve the years they set themselves aside. These feelings deserve kindness, not judgment.

You are allowed to be someone new

Rediscovering yourself does not always mean going back to who you were. You have lived through things that changed you. Some parts of you may return. Others may be completely new. A woman in our community described it as meeting herself for the first time in a while, and liking her more than she expected.

One small thing to try: Choose one value from the list and do one small thing today that honours it, even if it takes only ten minutes.
